Hacienda La Esmeralda
The birthplace of the Panamanian geisha
Operated by the Peterson family, Hacienda La Esmeralda is world-renowned for having revealed the exceptional potential of Geisha coffee, becoming an essential benchmark in the world of specialty coffee. Thanks to high altitudes, unique microclimates, and meticulous craftsmanship, La Esmeralda produces lots of unmatched purity and aromatic complexity. It is here that the modern Geisha was born—a legendary coffee, cultivated with precision and passion.
More specifically, in 2004, Hacienda La Esmeralda entered a 100% Geisha coffee into the Best of Panama competition for the first time. This high-altitude lot dazzled the judges with its floral aromas and liveliness, which closely resembled the profiles of Ethiopian coffees. The farm won the Best of Panama 2004 title, setting a record auction price.
The success didn’t stop there. At the 2025 Best of Panama competition, Hacienda La Esmeralda won the three main categories (Washed Geisha, Natural Geisha, Varietals) with record-breaking scores:
98.00 points for Washed Geisha (the highest score ever awarded)
97.00 points in Natural Geisha
They also received the Panama Cup, awarded to the best producer of the year.
