Kotowa Coffee

Centennial heritage and prestigious farms

Located on the fertile slopes of the Barú volcano, in the Boquete region, Kotowa Coffee is one of Panama's oldest and most prestigious coffee estates.

Founded in 1913 by Alexander Duncan Macintyre, a visionary Scottish-Canadian immigrant, the farm is now managed by Ricardo Koyner, representing the third generation of the family, alongside his daughter Victoria. The name Kotowa, meaning 'mountain' in an indigenous language, perfectly reflects the high-altitude character and terroir purity that shape the identity of its coffees.

The plantations are located between 1,650 and 1,900 meters above sea level, on rich volcanic soils and within a cool, humid microclimate.

The farm cultivates several varieties, including Geisha, Caturra, Catuai, Typica, and other experimental lots.

Internationally recognized since the 2000s, Kotowa has distinguished itself on numerous occasions at the Best of Panama competition, particularly for its exceptionally refined Geisha coffees.

Today, it stands as a global benchmark in specialty coffee, combining family heritage, agronomic innovation, and social commitment.

The farm implements health, education, and support programs for its worker families, while also conducting sustainable and environmentally friendly production, an approach that earned it the distinction of “The Year's Environmentally Cleanest Industry”.
