Hacienda la Esmeralda

Hacienda La Esmeralda is an iconic farm located in the mountains of Boquete, Panama.

Operated by the Peterson family, it is globally renowned for having unveiled the exceptional potential of Geisha, becoming an indispensable benchmark in the world of specialty coffee. Thanks to high altitudes, unique microclimates, and meticulous expertise, La Esmeralda produces lots of unparalleled purity and aromatic complexity. It is here that modern Geisha was born, a legendary coffee cultivated with precision and passion.

More specifically, in 2004, Hacienda La Esmeralda presented a 100% Geisha coffee for the first time in the Best of Panama competition. This high-altitude lot captivated judges with its floral aromas and vibrancy, closely resembling the profiles of Ethiopian coffees. The farm won the Best of Panama 2004 title, setting an auction price record.

The success did not stop there. In the 2025 edition of Best of Panama, Hacienda La Esmeralda won all three main categories (Geisha Washed, Geisha Natural, Varietals) with historic scores:
98.00 points for Washed Geisha (highest score ever awarded)
97.00 points for Natural Geisha
They also received the Panama Cup, awarded to the best producer of the year.

JARAMILLO

The Buenos Aires plot is located on the Jaramillo farm at an altitude of 1,700m.

The air in the Jaramillo mountains is humid and cool — ideal conditions for the Geisha variety to fully express its aromatic richness. Although Geisha coffee trees had been sporadically planted in the region, it was an isolated lot from a small area of this farm that led to the rediscovery of this variety.

The farm extends from rolling hills at lower elevations to steep slopes reaching 40 degrees, making harvesting entirely manual and particularly demanding. While the initial coffee plantations were located at lower altitudes, featuring up to 15 different sub-varieties from Costa Rica and Brazil, it was in 1997 that the Peterson family decided to plant higher up.

It is at these high altitudes that Geisha reveals its full floral and luminous vibrancy. With cool temperatures and the generous shade of majestic old trees, Jaramillo offers a perfect environment for this variety. Even today, many of the most remarkable Geisha microlots originate from small plots nestled on the slopes of Jaramillo.
